Following the recommendation of Superintendent Dan Wiebers, the Chillicothe R-II School Board of Education voted unanimously last (Tuesday) night to cancel the Catapult Learning program for summer school 2020. The action was taken during the regular May monthly meeting held at the Gary Dickinson Performing Arts Center. The program had been scheduled to be held between May 26 and June 24.

Earlier this month, district administrators had attempted to develop an alternate plan for summer school, however a solution could not be found that would both serve the health and academic interests of the students and also be fiscally responsible for the district.

“For the summer school program to break even financially, we would need to serve well over 300 students,” Mr. Wiebers explained. “Given the factors involved with the pandemic, that is something we just can’t depend on,” he added.

The Board did approve a contract extension with Catapult Learning for the summer of 2022 during the discussion.
